This view of the Kapuzinerberg at Salzburg was taken from the west bank of the Salzach, somewhere around today’s Rudolfskai. A Capuchin monastery was erected at the top of Kapuzinerberg hill, on the site of a former medieval fortress. The Church of St Johannes am Imberg can be seen at the bottom of the hill, to the left. The lower part of Turner’s view continues onto the folio opposite (Tate D29970; Turner Bequest CCXCVIII 79), and shows the Steingasse. This ancient street, nestled between the foot of the Kapuzinerberg and the river, was one of the principal routes through which goods imported and exported on the Salzach were transported to and from the city.
