Drawn with the page turned horizontally, this is a view of Sawley Abbey and bridge, dated by the present author to Wednesday 24 July 1816,1 when Turner travelled from Browsholme Hall to Malham. On the same occasion Turner also sketched the abbey from a more elevated viewpoint in the Yorkshire 4 sketchbook (Tate D11558–D11559; Turner Bequest CXLVIII 21a–22).
