Finberg later annotated his 1909 Inventory entry including his reading of Turner’s note below the upper view (‘“Schloss Nahun (?).”’): ‘?Nanders’.1 Turner rather seems to be noting the name of the ruined castle of Neuhaus (otherwise known as Maultasch), just south of Terlano (Terlan). Since partly restored, its distinctive square keep and outer defences, following the steep contours of the hillside, overlook the road through the Adige Valley on the western fringes of the Dolomites, between Merano (Meran) and Bolzano (Bozen); see respectively under folios 31 verso (D32322) and 29 verso (D32318).
The lower half of the page appears to comprise two rough inverted mountain views separated by a horizontal pencil line above which is written what may be ‘Meran’.
A long sequence of sketches, mostly characterised as ‘Mountains’ by Finberg (with occasional identifications and transcriptions of the place names marked by the artist), lies between folios 7 recto and 76 recto (D32275–D32411).2 See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the likely overall route between Bregenz and Venice.3
