This seascape is rendered swiftly with vigorous strokes of blue, green and grey wash. A mushrooming rain cloud looms at the left towards the blue streaked sky. As with the previous folio (Tate D17722; Turner Bequest CCII 3), the drawing is barely developed; simply a rough sketch of a compositional idea or quickly taken on the spot from the beach or boat. Similar handling can be found in Turner’s Skies sketchbook of about 1816–8 (Tate D12450–D12526; Turner Bequest CLVIII 2–69.
