The main view is south-west from the Pool of London, looking past foreground shipping and figures up the River Thames to Old London Bridge, with the tower of St Olave’s Church, the adjacent shot tower and the tower of Southwark Cathedral in outline beyond. At the top left is a slight, inverted study of part of the bridge, while a separate study of boats appears at the top right.
More than half the drawings in this sketchbook show the River Thames around Old London Bridge, and are likely to date from 1824; see the Introduction.
Technical notes:
There is prominent brown mottling to the upper half of the page, perhaps from proximity to the watercolour study on folio 22 recto opposite (D17876).
