J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

Drawn with the book turned to the right are sketches made at Dieppe. At the top is a group of figures, some of whom are seated on a low wall or embankment overlooking the coast with cliffs in the background. Beneath is a sketch of a group of small boats in the process of lowering or raising their sails, with a sketch of figures to the right. There are two sketches of the Gothic Church of St Jacques beneath this: at the left showing the arched windows of the nave with the western tower, and at the right the tower and central cupola with two female figures.

There are further sketches of Dieppe on folios 4, 5, 6, 8 verso, 13, 16, 25 and 32 (Tate D24506, D24508, D24510, D24515, D24524, D24530, D24547, D24560; Turner Bequest: CCLVIII 4, 5, 6, 8a, 13, 16, 25, 32).

Technical notes:

Finberg did not list this page in his inventory; presumably it was pasted to a support as the recto of this page was selected by John Ruskin for exhibition (see folio 1; D24500; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 1). There are glue marks in each of the four corners of the page and a right-angle drawn at the top-right corner to mark the position of the mount. The paper has discoloured apart from a narrow border around the edge which was once covered by the mount.
