These rough sketches of Givet, the Fort Charlemont, and Tour Victoire are continued from the folio opposite (Tate D19666; Turner Bequest CCXVI 58a). At centre the spire of the Church of Saint-Hilaire can be seen, delineated in simple profile. After having been destroyed by the Marshal of Créquy in 1675, the church was reconstructed in 1682 by Louis XIV’s chief military engineer Vauban, who, at the time, was also in charge of re-designing the Fort Charlemont.1
