There are several sketches on this page that need to be disentangled. The main sketch is across the bottom and at the right of the page. This is a view from the Necropolis that is similar to the sketch on folio 70 (D26392). At the extreme left of the sketch is an outline that may depict one of the monuments in the Necropolis. To the left of that is Glasgow Cathedral with its main tower and smaller west tower (which no longer stands). To the left of that is the old Barony Church which is depicted more clearly on the reverse of this page (folio 71 verso; D26395). Below this to the left is the Bridge of Sighs which crosses the Molendindar Burn. The view of church towers and spires above appears to constitute a separate sketch though this may also have been made from the Necropolis. This continues at the left on folio 70 verso (D26393). At the top left top of the page is a rough sketch that probably depicts the Bridge of Sighs with the steep bank above Molendinar Burn.
More finished sketches of Glasgow Cathedral and nearby buildings as seen from the Necropolis are on folios 70 and 71 verso. For more information on Turner’s visit to the city and references to further sketches, see folio 73 verso (D26399).
