Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the main view continues across folio 66 opposite (D18117), where Southampton is seen to the north-west. The low arched structure below the trees on this page is perhaps a lime kiln on the eastern shore of Southampton Water, in the vicinity of where Weston Parade now runs; it is shown from the other direction on folio 67 recto (D18119). This is one of a sequence of views in the Southampton area; see under folio 58 verso (D18102).
Below to the right, and apparently drawn before the main view, is a study of moored warships with one or two passing yachts. The ‘2’ inscribed here is in sequence with similar numbered sketches on folios 64 verso and 66 verso (D18114, D18118). For more on studies in this sketchbook relating to the regatta events at Cowes from late July 1827 onwards, see the sketchbook Introduction.
