Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
St Briavel’s Castle, Gloucestershire c.1793–4
Turner Bequest XXIII B
Pencil and watercolour on white wove paper, mounted on buff-grey laid card, 234 x 191 mm
Inscribed in red ink ‘XXIII.B’ bottom right
Stamped in black ‘XXIII B’ bottom right
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This sheet has been worked up somewhat perfunctorily in colour, perhaps at a slightly later date than the underlying pencil drawing. Finberg1 wondered if Edward Dayes (1763–1804) was the artist, but on the whole there seems no reason to doubt Turner’s authorship, at a moment when he was absorbing Dayes’s manner and experimenting widely in the watercolour medium. Compare the technique of Tate D00692 (Turner Bequest XXVIII G). However, note that two drawings very similar in style seem to be pupils’ copies (Tate D00382, D00866; Turner Bequest XXIII H, XXXII J); the latter may have been touched by Turner himself.
MS note, Tate catalogue files.
The sheet laid down; the back of the card mount blank.
