This page comprises half of a panoramic view, continuing to the right across folio 77 recto opposite (D19530), where Maastricht is shown ranged along the west bank of the River Maas (Meuse). The present section shows the lost northern walls and bastions of its smaller neighbour, Wyck, with St Martin’s Church (since rebuilt with its spire at the less conventional east end) near the round medieval Kruittoren (gunpowder tower), which survived long enough to be recorded in early photographs. The stone arches of the Sint Servaasbrug, then the only crossing, are not far upstream, and continue on the other page.
Today the Wilhelminabrug crosses not far north of the church, and its eastern approach provides a comparable viewpoint over the tree-lined quay off the Franciscus Romanusweg to the church. There are related views from further back on folios 22 verso (D19440), and folios 74 verso and 75 verso (D19525, D19527); the latter two form another panorama, with D19527 being of a similar scope to the present one, albeit in less detail. For the more varied range of sketches in and around Maastricht in the contemporary Holland sketchbook, and the city’s place within the present tour, see under Tate D19195 (Turner Bequest CCXIV 179a).
