Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Finberg’s suggestion of Edensor, near Chatsworth House (see under folio 43 verso; D22231), is incorrect; as Ian Warrell has recognised, the church is St Peter’s at Hope,1 the next Derbyshire village east of Castleton (see under folio 1 verso; D22152). The view is from the north, along Edale Road, past the gables of the Old Hall inn on the left. The medieval church’s unusually squat spire is seen again on folio 9 verso (D22166).
