With the page turned horizontally, the view is to the north-east, with Stoke to the left and Stonehouse to the right. The church is seen beyond the four blocks of the military hospital, now Devonport High School for Boys, above their connecting arcade. On the other side of the lake (later drained and now playing fields) are the similar blocks of the naval hospital. Turner’s viewpoint is to the east of the naval dockyards (Devonport).
There are other views in the area on folios 3 recto and 4 recto (D09220, D09221), and on folio 96 recto (D09322). The church is also seen on folio 110 recto (D09336). The subjects as far as folio 127 recto (D09358) are all identified or presumed sites within a few miles in and around Plymouth, suggesting a series of fairly short excursions.
Technical notes:
There is an area of dark rubbing or offsetting at the centre, affecting the drawing.
Verso:
Blank. Some brown staining at the bottom matches that on folio 100 recto opposite (D09326).
