Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
These studies were no doubt made with a historical subject in view, perhaps the painting Aeneas and the Sibyl, Lake Avernus (Tate N00463),1 which however Turner is thought to have painted a little earlier than the period of this book, about 1798.
