Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, there are four bands of miscellaneous studies. The first and largest shows three women from the back and front in hooded cloaks, with one wearing a ‘Red’ dress. Below to the left are a man in a soft cap and a woman in clogs, who may be pushing a barrow. To their right, a woman drives a small cart, possibly drawn by long-eared donkeys. Below is a more substantial waggon or carriage with a horse wearing a fitted blanket and hood, with annotations, and lastly comes a cursory sketch of a ‘Dung cart’.
There are similar studies on folio 207 verso opposite and the verso (D19251, D19253); the latter includes a larger study of women in bonnets and cloaks. While there is no indication of their setting, they were likely made in the streets of Ghent as they fall within a series of views around the city; see under folio 201 verso (D19239). See the sketchbook’s Introduction for discussion of its many figure scenes, and studies of individuals, their costume and headgear.
