Joseph Mallord William Turner Studies on a Channel Coast 1845

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 33 Verso:
Studies on a Channel Coast 1845
D35546
Turner Bequest CCCLXI 33a
Pencil on white wove paper, 111 x 86 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘[...]’ top centre

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned vertically, there are three or four rapid, rough studies apparently showing shipping and waves off a coastline, where the buildings may include a lighthouse. Turner’s inscription at the top is illegible, and there appear to be one or two other brief annotations. The viewpoint is perhaps a boat in the Channel. See the sketchbook’s Introduction for the many slight coastal views scattered through it, and compare folio 34 recto opposite (D35547).
Technical notes:
There is some brown staining at the gutter, possibly indicating water damage in the 1928 Tate flood.
