This view of Tantallon Castle, taken from the east, shows the ruins of the structure in some detail. Unlike many of the other drawings of the subject in this sketchbook, which just give the overall shape of the castle, here architectural features such as the battlements, turrets and windows can be made out making it more obvious how the castle might have once looked. An inscription at the bottom of the page was made to remind the artist of the ‘Rocky Ravine’ just behind where he must have stood to make this drawing which continues at the left on folio 11 verso (D13604; CLXVII 10a). The next page shows a view of the castle from the west (folio 13; D13606; CLXVII 12).
