Turner turned the sketchbook to landscape format to make this drawing. Possibly of circa 1535–9, Lotto’s (Lorenzo Lotto circa 1480–1556) picture was acquired by Louis XIV in 1662. The Holy Family appears with St Elizabeth and Zachariah. Ziff has suggested some influence of the pose of the Family on Turner’s own Holy Family (Tate N00473),1 but Butlin and Joll dispute this.
The superscribed initials must relate to a colour key.
