In this swiftly rendered sketch Turner pictures the fortified city of Verdun in north-eastern France. From left to right can be seen the tenth-century Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame, the crenellated half-moon towers of the Porte Chaussée gateway, and finally the eighteenth-century Jesuit Chapel of Saint-Nicholas.1 For further sketches of Verdun, see Tate D19694–D19698; Turner Bequest CCXVI 73–75.
