Drawing from a location on what is now called the Avenue des Combattants, this finely rendered study of Dinant incorporates the citadel, the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame and the Porte Saint-Martin at far right. At top right Turner has made a cursory sketch of the ornate tracery above one of the church’s portals.

Technical notes:
The paper has mottled and browned significantly, a result of the drawing’s prolonged exhibition and exposure to sunlight during the nineteenth century.
