Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the Baroque tower and about half the south side of the Gothic nave of the Deutschhauskirche are seen from Zellerstrasse, as Cecilia Powell recognised.1 The street leads north-west from Würzburg’s Alte Mainbrücke; this prospect is now partly obscured by trees. Turner has shaded the archway to the lane leading directly under the church.
For the extensive sequence of Würzburg views in this sketchbook and others elsewhere, see under folio 72 verso (D30596; CCCIII 71).
