The two uppermost sketches form one view, possibly showing the east bank of the Rhine near Andernach. Andernach is depicted in the sketch below, with boats moored on the river, the distant onion dome of the Archbishop’s Castle at left, the watchtower and the spires of St Mary Assumption Church rendered in profile at right (see Tate D12795, D12880, D12655–D12656, D19838; Turner Bequest CLX 49, 92, CLIX 79a–80, CCXVI 144). The rear view shows part of Andernach, looking upstream (inscribed ‘above Markburg’).
