The drawing was made with the page turned horizontally. Finberg later annotated his 1909 Inventory entry (‘Entrance Grand Canal with S. Maria della Salute on right’): ‘From Gd Hotel traghetto, Salute on right, with Dogana beyond’.1 Looking east, perhaps from off the Palazzi Barbarigo Minotto and Barbarigo, near the later Santa Maria del Giglio vaporetto station, the near side of the Palazzo Pisani Gritti is shown on the left. The Salute is now largely obscured from this angle by the Gothic Revival Palazzo Genovese overlooking the canal.
There are various comparable views of this scene, not far from the Hotel Europa, where Turner was staying a little further down opposite the Salute (see the subsection of views from the hotel itself); for example, Anne Lyles has compared the prospect in a contemporary watercolour study, made from a little further west (Tate D32138; Turner Bequest CCCXVI 1).2
