Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This is the last of several Exe views beginning on folio 66 verso (D08489; CXXIII 63a). There appears to be a scrawled inscription towards the bottom right which may begin with a ‘C’, possibly for Turner’s customary note ‘corn’ or perhaps indicating Cockwood, on the west bank of the Exe Estuary, in which case the view may be eastwards to the Exmouth side; or the site may be further south, towards Dawlish Warren. For Dawlish see folios 67 verso and 71 recto (D08491, D08498; CXXIII 64a, 68).
