As Turner’s inscription in the bottom left-hand corner indicates, this page contains sketches relating to Moncalieri (‘Monte Calieri’), a town approximately five miles south of Turin. The largest study depicts a view looking east across the southern façade of the Castello Reale, a residence of the ruling House of Savoy which stands on high ground to the north of Moncalieri.1 The castle’s distinctive design is characterised by three galleries connected at the ends by square angular towers, while in this view additionally can be seen the round towers framing the main entrance. A separate landscape sketch can be seen at the top of the page, probably depicting the view seen from the Castello Reale hill.
For a list of further views of Moncalieri see folio 17 (D14176; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 16).
