Turner made several sketches of the Géronstère mineral spring in its richly wooded setting in the hills two miles south of Spa, Belgium (Tate D28079, D28081; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 19a, 20a). There is also a gouache, pen and ink, and watercolour drawing on blue paper of the spring (Tate D24745; Turner Bequest CCLIX 180).
This quickly wrought sketch depicts a group of tall, densely foliated trees with a winding path and two small huts within. The surrounding topography has been fleetingly suggested but left undeveloped.
