This view is taken from above Vevey, possibly from the terrace of St Martin’s Cathedral, looking towards the head of Lake Geneva, with the Tour de Peilz in the centre and figures in the foreground. Turner painted a similar view in a watercolour of Vevey (private collection) painted about 18091 and sketched the same material but from further to the right in the present sketchbook (D29065; Turner Bequest CCXCIII 17a).
