Turner’s label for this drawing is inscribed ‘La Route de Voreppe a Grenoble’. Turner surveys the flat floor of the Isère Valley from the road from Voreppe and Lyons. In his catalogue notes for Marlborough House, John Ruskin described this drawing as ‘Careless but grand in toss of mountain form, and in the noble contradiction of the slope from the left by the diagonal light of the Alp seen through the gap in the distance’.1
