This is a side view of the New Gate, now isolated among fields to the south-west of Winchelsea. To the right, in front of the gate among trees, one can make out the remains of the town ditch, part of its former defences. A frontal view of the gate is on folio 72 verso of the sketchbook (D10537; Turner Bequest CXL 65a). The trees near the gate are still standing today.
