The uppermost sketch and the three that follow show the Rhine stretching from the Niederwald (inscribed and shortened to ‘Nede’), Rüdesheim to the Schloss Johannisberg (see Tate D29689; Turner Bequest CCXCVI 48 and The Johannisberg, a watercolour of 1817 in the collection of the British Museum, London). ‘R[...] to Johburg’ is inscribed towards top right.
A view showing the opposite bank of the river is rendered near the gutter of the sketchbook and in two installments (the second numbered ‘2’). Bingen, the Mäuseturm and Rüdesheim are depicted from a distance. ‘R’ is inscribed above Rüdesheim at right.
