The uppermost view inscribed ‘Nied’ may show the Niederwald, a hill on the right bank of the Rhine near Rüdesheim (depicted in the lowermost sketch). Below this view is a sketch of the Burg Ehrenfels, overlooking the Rhine from atop a cliff; the Mäuseturm, a watchtower positioned on a river island on the opposite bank, is roughly suggested at left (for a closer view see Tate D29741; Turner Bequest CCXCVI 74a). The central views show Bingen and the church of St Martin, with a bridge crossing the River Nahe. Rüdesheim, inscribed ‘Rudeseim’, is shown in the lowermost view (see Tate D29739; Turner Bequest CCXCVI 73a).
