Joseph Mallord William Turner ?The River Medway near Rochester c.1805-9

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 33 Recto:
?The River Medway near Rochester circa 1805–9
Turner Bequest XCIX 29
Pencil on off-white wove paper, 115 x 190 mm
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This is the same view as in folio 32 recto (D06405; Turner Bequest XCIX 28) seen more closely. A large ship, partly dismasted and with an awning over her stern, is probably one of the hulks or service ships that were moored in the Medway; compare Turner’s watercolour Rochester, on the River Medway (Tate D18156; Turner Bequest CCVIII W) engraved for The Rivers of England.
