The subject of this sketch is currently unidentified although it appears to depict a river, probably the Tiber, winding past a building on the left. The building may be the same house depicted in folio 50 (D16471; Turner Bequest CXC 56). Like many drawings within this sketchbook, the composition has been executed over a washed grey background and Turner has created areas of pale highlights by lifting or rubbing through to the white paper beneath.
