Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 30 Verso:
The Three Towers 1831
Turner Bequest CCLXIV 30a
Pencil on white wove paper, 74 x 94 mm
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This sketch remains unidentified, although the towers and turrets are likely to belong to a castle, and the buildings at the right suggest that the sketch may have been taken from outside the castle gates. Based on other sketches made on this tour and in this sketchbook the most likely location is Carlisle Castle, although it cannot be closely matched.
