This is based on the drawing by John Robert Cozens (1752–1797) in Beckford Sketchbook I, p.31, inscribed ‘Near Terracina. July 5 [1782]’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.4.31).1 It is recorded in Beaumont tracing no.77 (B) [194:77(B)] (after Cozens; Yale Center for British Art, New Haven).
Another drawing of Terracina is in the second Monro album (Tate D36496; Turner Bequest CCCLXXIV 18). Some scholars, including A.P. Oppé, have considered this drawing to be entirely by Girtin.
