The subject is taken from a drawing by John Robert Cozens (1752–1797) in Beckford Sketchbook I, p.25, titled ‘Monte della Madona [sic] near Arcqua the residence of Petrarch – Euganian Hills’ and dated ‘June 19 [1782]’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.4.24);1 see also Beaumont tracing no.199 (after Cozens; Yale Center for British Art, New Haven). Bell and Girtin cite an inscription on the tracing stating that the view is ‘from the Hill with the convent surrounded by fir and cypress’; the convent being the subject of another watercolour, based on a drawing in Beckford Sketchbook I, p.23, titled the ‘Convent of ––– from Mirabella’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, D1975.4.23).2
