The pencil work is by Girtin. This was copied from a sketch by John Robert Cozens (1752–1797), presumably bearing the title transcribed by Girtin on the verso. Finberg and Warrell note the related Cozens watercolour Valley with Winding Streams in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (D.708).

The sheet is faded and discoloured from prolonged exposure. There is a ruled pencil line approximately 7 mm from the bottom edge.

Blank; inscribed by Girtin in pencil ‘Plains near Turin with | the Alps near Mt Cenis’; and in a later hand ‘No 2’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
