Here Turner has produced three sketches of Cologne from the Rhine. Great Saint Martin Church, the Cathedral, St Gereon’s Basilica and St Cunibert’s are among a few of the city’s many religious buildings seen here. Also visible is the Town Hall and the Bayenturm, a tower built to fortify Cologne in the thirteenth century. See also Tate D30762; Turner Bequest 69a.
The figure of a woman can be seen at top right. Just above her is the inscription ‘Bon’.
