Rendered with agile line, this sketch shows Treis with the ancient Zilleskapelle crowning the promontory at left, St John the Baptist’s church within the town itself, and the donjon tower of the Burg Treis atop a conical hill at centre. Turner took this sketch as he travelled past Treis by boat on the way to Koblenz and transformed it upon his return to London into a gouache and watercolour drawing on blue paper (Tate D20233; Turner Bequest CCXX Z). See also Treis from the North (Tate D28967; Turner Bequest CCXCII 20) and a further sketch of Treis and the chapel of Zills on folio 9 verso of this sketchbook (Tate D28554; Turner Bequest CCXCI 9 a).
