Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
These are copies of Madonna with St George (1529/30) and Madonna with St Francis (1514/15) by Antonio da Correggio (1489–1534). Turner saw these paintings at the Dresden Picture Gallery (see also Tate D31030–D31031, D31033; Turner Bequest CCCVII 6–6a, 7a). Colour notes have been inscribed around each sketch: ‘B’, ‘Or’, ‘Red’, ‘Red’, ‘L[ight] B[lue]’, ‘Red’(around Madonna with St George) and ‘L’, ‘C’, ‘Blue’, ‘W’, ‘Red’, ‘Red’ (around Madonna with St Francis). There is also a sketch of the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Holy Cross), a basilica at Dresden. Turner has inscribed ‘Sporer Strasse’ above.
