The subjects of these two sketches are currently unidentified, although they are likely to relate to Turner’s return journey from Italy through France in January 1820. The uppermost study appears to represent a bay with a headland, and the composition continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 102 verso (D16881; Turner Bequest CXCIII 101a).
