Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 91 Verso:
Two Sketches of Château d’Argent and Villeneuve, Val d’Aosta 1836
Turner Bequest CCXCIV 90 (but see main catalogue entry)
Pencil on white wove paper, 104 x 148 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘1’ by the top sketch and ‘2’ and ‘Mt Cenis’ by the lower sketch
Inscribed by unknown hand in pencil ‘25’ bottom left, inverted
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This page contains two sketches:
i. (main sketch,): Château d’Argent above Villeneuve, Val d’Aosta, looking to Mont Emilius, numbered ‘1’ lower right. This hasty sketch revisits the subject of an earlier one made in 1802 (Tate D04500; Turner Bequest LXXIV 8), which in turn formed the basis of an unfinished watercolour (Tate D04895; Turner Bequest LXXX B).
ii. (lower right) A thumbnail sketch, numbered ‘2’ , of a distant view down the Val d’Aosta towards Château d’Argent and Villeneuve from a high viewpoint near Introd; inscribed in foreground ‘Mt C’.
Now bound as the verso, this side of the page was described as the recto by Finberg despite the other side, otherwise blank, having been numbered as such, probably by John Ruskin, and inscribed with the Turner Bequest schedule number.
