Working with the page turned horizontally and combining brushwork in brown ink, red watercolour, some gouache and a little pencil, it is possible that Turner noted these turkeys in 1799, at the same time as the swans he studied on folios 7 verso and 8 recto (D01689–D01690; Turner Bequest XLII 14, 15); he juxtaposed studies of turkeys and swans in his contemporary Salisbury sketchbook (Tate D02244–D02246; Turner Bequest XLIX 2, 3, 4).
