This sketch is too rough to be conclusively identified, although it almost certainly shows a view within the Val di Susa (Susa Valley) between Susa and Turin. Federico Crimi has suggested it may even depict the small town of San Giorio di Susa.1 Part of the composition spills over onto the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 5 verso (Tate D14153; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 4a).
