This sketch shows boats in front of the arches of a bridge. In the centre is two male figures wearing hats and long cloaks. The location is unidentified. Turner frequently sketched ships and boats which feature heavily in many of his paintings. This drawing may although it may predate the artist’s use of the sketchbook as a notebook relating to his Italian travels in the autumn of 1819.
