This sketch forms part of a view amidst the Lattari Mountains from the nineteenth-century road between Naples and Salerno. Turner’s route entered the mountains at Nocera and passed through Cava de’ Tirreni and Molina before emerging on the Amalfi coast at Vietri sul Mare. The rough nature of the draughtsmanship suggests that the artist was drawing from a moving carriage or other vehicle, and the shaky lines makes the individual locations difficult to identify. The composition at continues on the opposite sheet of the double-page spread, see folio 28 verso (D15791).
