This page contains a couple of sketches. Turner’s inscription identifies one extremely rough landscape view as Avallon, a town in Burgundy (Bourgogne), France, approximately thirty-two miles south-east of Auxerre. At the top of the page, meanwhile, is a drawing of a bridge, possibly that of Auxerre, see folio 96 verso (D16871; Turner Bequest CXCIII 96a). Both locations formed part of the artist’s route home from Italy in January 1820.
