The study for the finished watercolour (private collection).1 It is inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. There is a blue colour trial in the top right corner. Finberg also records: ‘Light and dark masonry in different parts of building indicated by initials, “D.S.” and “W.S.”’ and gives part of the main inscription as ‘Unicorn and Lion’.2

The leaf is stained through in the centre with what appears to be brown varnish.
