The rough nature of this drawing makes the details of the subject difficult to identify. However, it appears to represent a sketch of the medieval watch-tower overlooking the valley and the cascatelli, or lesser cascades of the River Aniene, to the north of Tivoli. Turner’s viewpoint, visible in the left-hand foreground is currently unidentified, although it may be the ruined convent of Sant’Angelo in the hills to the north-east of the town, also known as the supposed location of the Villa of Catullus.1 Like many drawings within this sketchbook, the composition has been executed over a washed grey background and Turner has created highlights by rubbing or lifting out the wash to reveal the white paper beneath.
