Federico Crimi has identified the subject of this sketch as the Church of Santi Quirico e Giulitta which stands near the western shore of Lake Como in the town of Carate Urio.1 The drawing is one of a series of studies recording a circular expedition by boat and on foot between Como and Lario and this view appears to relate to the return leg of the journey. A more detailed study can be seen on folio 55 (D14248; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 54).
For further sketches of Lake Como see folio 48 (D14234; Turner Bequest CLXXIV 47).
